Ventient Energy is a leading renewable energy company that specializes in onshore wind energy generation. It was established in 2017 and is headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland. The company is one of the largest independent operators of onshore wind farms in Europe.
Ventient Energy operates a portfolio of wind farms across the UK, Ireland, Sweden, and Germany. These wind farms collectively have a significant installed capacity, generating clean and sustainable energy to power thousands of homes and businesses.
With a strong commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions, Ventient Energy plays a crucial role in the transition to a low-carbon energy future. The company actively contributes to meeting renewable energy targets and supporting the global effort to combat climate change.

The Opportunity
KSB Technologies LTD took great pride in assisting Ventient Energy with their data management and enrichment processes, focusing on the implementation of Microsoft Azure’s services. This multifaceted project involved several stages, each contributing to an efficient, seamless, and robust data pipeline.
Our first task was the development of Logic Apps that facilitated data retrieval from multiple sources, ranging from FTP and HTTP servers to Dynamics 365 and SharePoint platforms. We also implemented an email trigger from Office 365. To ensure secure access, we stored all necessary credentials in a dedicated Key Vault.
The data fetched from these sources was stored in Azure Blob Storage in its raw format. Any new file event triggered by the storage was processed through Azure Event Grid, which then routed the event onto the relevant Service Bus queue for import.
A custom import Function App was developed to read the queue and process the file. Here again, the Key Vault played an essential role in securely managing access credentials. An essential design aspect was ensuring that the queue record was only consumed upon successful completion of the process.
Depending on the data requirements, we implemented two separate workflows. If the data required no further enrichment, it was directly written to the data lake. If additional enrichment was necessary, the data was written to staging Blob Storage. Here, the data could undergo protocol conversion or document splitting, as required.
The enriched data was then transformed to its domain format through a separate Function App. The domain objects were then written to the data lake storage and were ready for consumption.
For Ventient Energy’s Revenue Database replacement, Data Factory consumed objects from the data lake, transforming and synchronising them with Azure SQL Revenue databases. Finally, data could be consumed directly by Power BI either from the data lake or from Azure SQL, offering insightful visualizations and analytics.

Provided a scalable and secure data lake functionality that could handle large volumes of data of any type, from any source, enabling scalable big data analytics.
Azure Data Factory
Allowed the orchestration and transformation of structured and unstructured data from various sources into meaningful business information, powering data-driven decision-making.
Azure SQL
Facilitated the storage, retrieval, and manipulation of relational data, supporting a wide range of transaction processing, business intelligence, and analytics applications.
Power BI
Enabled the creation of interactive visualizations and business intelligence capabilities with an interface that’s intuitive for end-users to create their own reports and dashboards, thereby enhancing data accessibility and decision-making.
The Impact
